The Canadian government will grant up to 13.2 billion Canadian dollars (8.8 billion euros) over a ten-year period to the German automaker Volkswagen to build its first electric battery factory outside Europe in Canada, according to AFP .

Volkswagen had announced in mid-March its intention to build the plant in St. Thomas, Ontario, becoming the first automaker to locate in Canada in 35 years.
“The investment will depend on the number of batteries manufactured and will be between $8 billion and $13.2 billion,” the government said.
The plant will create “3,000 direct jobs and up to 30,000 indirect jobs,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said, calling it a “historic step forward.”
Work would begin next year and production should begin in 2027.
The plant will produce batteries “for up to one million electric vehicles per year.”
“The factory in St. Thomas will be a national anchor in the electric vehicle supply chain,” Trudeau added at a news conference.
Volkswagen is investing “$7 billion” in this plant, which is “the largest investment in the electric vehicle sector in Canadian history.”
