Elke Wevers Disappearance Investigation: Zuid-Willemsvaart Canal Search and Updates

2023-08-09 18:38:00

Searches in the Zuid-Willemsvaart canal in Voorshoven (Maaseik) in connection with the disappearance of Elke Wevers did not yield any results. Civil protection as well as police and divers were deployed as part of this operation.

This search was carried out following information received by the police from a citizen who had recently taken pictures in the canal with an underwater camera and had found a suspicious object. The man thought he saw a skull, which was obviously not the case.

Research was carried out late Wednesday morning under the supervision of an investigating judge and in the presence of the Limburg King’s prosecutor. The towpath along the canal has been closed to cyclists and motorized traffic. The search ended around 4:00 p.m. and no further action is planned at this time.

Elke Wevers, 32, disappeared on December 9, 2010 while leaving for work in Maaseik. She had texted a colleague telling him that she was finally going home, not feeling well. However, she never returned home.
