The UZ Leuven microbiologist spoke about the contagiousness of the British variant of the coronavirus.
Lhe corona police station reported to health authorities on Wednesday evening on the development of the coronavirus and its variants in Belgium. A number of clusters have been confirmed with the UK variant B117, which is more contagious and expected to become dominant – by March. Emmanuel André was the guest of the morning of the Première on RTBF to speak on this report.
The microbiologist warned from the outset that this is not “a report on what to do”, but alert: “The British variant is spreading (…) At the end of February beginning of March, it will be the main virus in Belgium. According to André, by the end of the month, 90% of all new infections will be with this variant. Today, 87% of sequencing of the Spike protein with which the virus enters our cells bear the trace of the British variant.
However, Emmanuel André recalls that “the virus remains the same, we can break the chains of transmission”, in particular by conventional barrier gestures, but we must be more careful, according to him.
“We can still avoid a complete lockdown”
Asked about a possible third wave that could result from this variant, the microbiologist from UZ Leuven is quite clear: “I think it has started. “
Finally for Emmanuel André, “we can still avoid a complete lockdown”.
