Empowering Education in Africa: UAE-UN Partnership for Digital Learning and Nutrition

2023-09-26 11:18:13

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) have signed a partnership agreement to promote digital education in Africa, particularly sub-Saharan Africa. This agreement aims to ensure quality digital education and adequate nutrition in African schools, combining school meals with digital education to help vulnerable communities. The UAE’s The Digital School initiative, which has already been implemented in the Maghreb, will be extended to sub-Saharan Africa through this partnership.

The Digital School is an initiative of Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives (MBRGI) which aims to provide certified online education to students who do not have access to formal education. This initiative offers live, self-paced virtual lessons in subjects such as mathematics, science, Arabic, computer science and English.

Currently, The Digital School is already present in Egypt and Mauritania. This new collaboration will extend it to sub-Saharan Africa, starting with the southern region of the Southern African Development Community (SADC). Projects to expand the network of partners, including private sector players and telecommunications companies, are under development. A SADC High-Level Meeting on Digital Education is planned for 27-29 November 2023 in Cape Town, South Africa, to develop a roadmap on digital education in Southern Africa.
