Environmentalists took 26 parrots of protected species illegally stored in the basement

Officials of the Alytus wildlife protection department. m. February. carried out an inspection of wild animals kept in the basement of a house in Neveronesi, Kaunas district. It housed parrots and other animals (guinea pigs, hamsters).

The person keeping the animals did not have any documents that allow them to legally keep animals of protected species. In February this year, following receiving a court decision to enter a person’s living quarters and with the participation of specialists from the Wild Animal Care Center, the officers of the Alytus Wildlife Protection Department took 26 parrots of protected species and handed them over to the Animal Care Center.

A protocol of administrative offense was drawn up for the person who illegally kept the taken animals and a fine of 30 euros was imposed.

Information regarding other animals kept in the basement in potentially bad conditions (rodents and parrots of non-protected species) and ensuring the welfare of these animals was immediately forwarded to the State Food and Veterinary Service (VMVT) for further investigation.

At the end of last year, following conducting a risk assessment of wild animal keepers, the results of the Environmental Protection Department and VMVT systems were compared. The aim is to identify wildlife keepers who ignore environmental requirements. Of the 13 holders identified, 7 were verified. 3 violations were detected.
