Epidemic of Dengue Fever in Burkina Faso: 356 Deaths Reported, Government Takes Action

The Director of the Health Emergency Response Operations Center of the Ministry of Health in Burkina Faso, Joseph Sabigha, revealed that the epidemic of dengue fever, a disease transmitted by mosquitoes, led to the death of 356 people in the country, between the middle of last October and the middle of this November.

He explained during a press conference, “Since the first of January 2023 until the 19th of this November, 123,804 cases of dengue fever have been reported, including 56,637 probable cases and 570 deaths, with a fatality rate estimated at 1%,” indicating that “as of October 15, “214 deaths have been reported since the beginning of the year. Between October 15 and November 19, 356 people died from fever.” He stated that “1,642 homes of infected people and neighboring homes, and 696 public places, were disinfected.”

To stop the spread of the epidemic, the government launched a campaign to spray mosquito killers in the two most affected cities, the capital, Ouagadougou, and Bobo-Dioulasso.
