It’s almost fourteen months since the traditionally neutral Sweden joined Finland in applying for NATO membership. While Finland has been part of the defense alliance since April, Sweden has had to wait until now. The reason for this: in addition to Hungary, Turkey in particular is blocking Stockholm’s admission process. On Thursday followingnoon, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg invited the foreign ministers of Sweden and Turkey to the Brussels headquarters to sound out the chances of Ankara agreeing to enlargement before the eagerly awaited summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, next week.
