Espeon & Umbreon: Can You Get Them in Pokémon FireRed & LeafGreen?

For Pokémon trainers revisiting the Kanto region in the newly released Pokémon FireRed & LeafGreen on Nintendo Switch, acquiring all 151 Pokémon presents a unique challenge. While Eevee is obtainable in Celadon City, evolving it into the fan-favorite Psychic-type Espeon or Dark-type Umbreon proves impossible within the confines of the original game’s mechanics. This limitation stems from a key feature absent from these classic titles: a day and night cycle.

The introduction of Espeon and Umbreon in the Generation II games, Pokémon Gold & Silver, tied their evolution to specific conditions. Eevee needed high friendship during the day to evolve into Espeon, and high friendship at night to become Umbreon. Pokémon FireRed & LeafGreen, being remakes of the original Generation I games, lacked the programming to simulate these time-based evolutions, leaving players with limited options for completing their Pokédex.

Despite this in-game restriction, there are still avenues for trainers determined to add Espeon and Umbreon to their collections. The original intention, when FireRed & LeafGreen first launched, was for players to trade with those playing Pokémon Ruby & Sapphire, the subsequent generation of games that did feature a day/night cycle. This allowed players to obtain these elusive Eeveelutions through cross-generational trading.

As of now, Nintendo has not announced plans to release further classic Pokémon titles on the Nintendo Switch, meaning direct trading with Ruby & Sapphire is currently unavailable. But, speculation suggests that the remaining Generation III games may eventually arrive on the Switch and potentially a future Switch 2 console. Should this occur, trading Espeon and Umbreon from those titles via local multiplayer would become a viable option, as Pokémon Ruby & Sapphire do include the necessary day and night cycle functionality.

Successfully trading with Pokémon Ruby & Sapphire too requires completion of the post-game content in FireRed & LeafGreen, specifically the challenges presented on the Sevii Islands. This means players may only be able to acquire Espeon and Umbreon after fully completing their journey and expanding their Pokédex, rather than utilizing them during their initial playthrough.

A promising development for Pokémon trainers is the confirmed compatibility of Pokémon FireRed & LeafGreen with Pokémon Home, a cloud-based service for storing and transferring Pokémon. While it’s currently confirmed that players can transfer Pokémon to Pokémon Home from the new games, the ability to transfer Pokémon from newer games into FireRed & LeafGreen remains unconfirmed.

Pokémon FireRed & LeafGreen present a considerable challenge for completionists, particularly when seeking Pokémon originating from the Johto and Hoenn regions. For players on the Nintendo Switch, achieving a complete Pokédex may require acquiring additional classic titles and dedicating significant time to grinding and trading. The path to obtaining Espeon and Umbreon, while currently limited, may open up with future releases and updates.

As Nintendo continues to bring classic Pokémon experiences to modern platforms, the possibility of expanded trading options and the inclusion of previously unavailable features remains a hopeful prospect for dedicated fans. Retain an eye on official announcements from Nintendo and The Pokémon Company for updates on future compatibility and potential methods for acquiring all 151 Pokémon in FireRed & LeafGreen.
