EU Agreement Extends List of Environmental Crimes: Impact on Illegal Timber Trade, Invasive Species, and More

2023-11-19 07:00:56

This Thursday, the European Parliament and member states reached an agreement which extends the list of environmental crimes and harmonizes the sanctions provided for in the EU. Illegal timber trade, import of invasive species, pollution caused by ships, and violations of chemical laws will now be part of the list of environmental crimes.

And although the term “ecocide” is not (yet?) recognized at the international level, this new provisional agreement toughens the 2008 European directive which was considered too weak and ineffective once morest environmental crime, which is in full swing and among the more lucrative for organized crime globally.

With this new agreement, individuals guilty of offenses (including company representatives) will be punished with five to ten years of imprisonment and the fines imposed might increase up to 5% of the company’s annual global turnover.
