This was announced by Josep Borrell, the top diplomat of the European Union. He responded that the security of diplomatic posts and personnel is the primary responsibility of the Sudanese authorities and an obligation under international law. Meanwhile, the bloody fighting between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Force (RSF) entered its fourth day.

About 200 people were killed and 1,800 injured in the fighting. Both sides claimed to control key areas in the capital, Khartoum, where residents have taken refuge from the blasts. After three days of urban warfare, hospitals are damaged and medical supplies and food are in dire shortage.

The fight is part of a vicious power struggle within the country’s military leadership. Gradually it escalated into violence between rivals. The two men at its center disagree on how the country should transition to civilian rule. Sudan has been ruled by generals since the 2019 overthrow of longtime dictator Omar al-Bashir.
