The European Parliament backed a non-binding resolution by a large majority on Wednesday calling for Romania and Bulgaria to join the Schengen area by the end of 2023. The resolution was adopted with 526 votes in favour, 57 once morest and 42 abstentions. Surprisingly, Austria vetoed Romania’s accession in December last year. The Netherlands had opposed Bulgaria’s accession. Austria justified its no with an allegedly high number of migrants who come into the country via Romania.
