Movsar Evloev delivered a dominant performance at UFC London on Saturday, defeating Lerone Murphy and significantly impacting the featherweight title picture. The victory, secured through a combination of grappling prowess and strategic striking, throws Evloev’s name firmly into contention for a shot at Alexander Volkanovski’s belt. The event, held at the O2 Arena, saw Evloev overcome a spirited effort from Murphy, who was looking to rebound from being passed over for a title opportunity earlier this year.
Murphy had been anticipating a title fight against champion Volkanovski in January, but that chance was given to Diego Lopes instead. Despite a business-like walkout that didn’t elicit the same fervent reception as local favorites like Tom Aspinall or Paddy Pimblett, Murphy received a warm welcome from the crowd as he entered the octagon. Evloev, even though, was met with a chorus of boos, which he playfully acknowledged with a smile and a heart-shaped gesture towards the audience.
The fight began with Murphy finding success utilizing leg kicks and a one-two uppercut combination, encouraged by chants of “Oh Miracle Murphy.” He largely worked effectively with his back against the cage. While Evloev was expected to prioritize grappling, he didn’t attempt his first takedown until the third round, after Murphy had begun to gain the upper hand in the striking exchanges. Murphy quickly returned to his feet after the initial takedown attempt, landing a counter right hook that drew a roar from the crowd, but Evloev ultimately ended the round in a dominant position, opening a cut above Murphy’s left eye with a flurry of strikes.
The fourth round saw a brief delay as Murphy recovered from an accidental groin strike, resulting in a point deduction for Evloev. However, the momentum began to shift decisively in Evloev’s favor. After informing his corner that he had sustained a hip injury, Murphy struggled to defend Evloev’s takedown attempts, and the Russian fighter capitalized, gaining control in the closing stages of the bout. Despite being roared on by the crowd as he repeatedly got back to his feet, Murphy found himself consistently taken down, with Evloev securing a total of nine takedowns throughout the fight.
“I told you I was a better striker than him – joking!” Evloev stated after the fight. “Me and my coach were preparing more fakes, takedowns and punches. I think my punches are hard, I can hurt the opponent. Look at his face, he is damaged. I don’t have to use my wrestling to get the win.”
The win for Evloev, who remains undefeated, positions him as a strong contender for a title shot. Alexander Volkanovski recently defended his featherweight title against Diego Lopes by unanimous decision at UFC 325, tying Jose Aldo’s record for most title-fight wins in featherweight history. Volkanovski has consistently stated he will face the most deserving challenger, emphasizing performance over rankings.
Evloev’s victory at UFC London adds another layer to the already competitive featherweight division. He has now proven his ability to overcome adversity and control a fight against a tough opponent in Murphy. The question now becomes whether Volkanovski will view Evloev’s performance as enough to earn him the next title opportunity, or if other contenders will emerge to challenge for the crown.
With Volkanovski’s clear message – “If you deserve it, you’re next” – the pressure is on the featherweight contenders to deliver compelling performances. The division remains wide open, and the path to a title shot is far from certain.
