Examining the Threats to Democracy: Insights from French-speaking Party Presidents

2023-09-03 14:09:45

Is our parliamentary democratic system in danger?

We brought together at the “Soir” the presidents of the French-speaking parties (only Paul Magnette declined our invitation), for an in-depth debate on this single, but broad, theme of democracy. What specific fears do they express? Are they questioning their practices? What part of the responsibility do they bear? But also: what solutions do they propose to improve, open up or reform our democratic system?

The five presidents addressing “the disproportionate power” of… party presidents (not all agree, you will read it), the dropping out of citizens (not all agree, bis), extremism and the cordon sanitaire (not all … ter), the decumulation of mandates or the referendum (quater), the end of a system (quinquies), the class struggle (there, Hedebouw was all alone, but he repeated it for five)…

The debate was concrete, fruitful, interesting. You will discover the report of this multiparty exchange, as if you were there, from this Monday in the newspaper The eveningon our site and application.
