Experience Theatre Project Immerses Audiences in Irish Wake & New Aloha Home

Experience Theatre Project is currently captivating audiences with its immersive production of Flanagan’s Wake, a unique Irish-themed comedy that not only entertains but similarly invites participation. Running through March 22, this show marks a significant milestone as it’s the penultimate production of the company’s 10th anniversary season. The immersive nature of the play allows attendees to engage in a comic wake for a fictional character, Flanagan, enhancing the overall theatrical experience.

Located in Aloha, Oregon, the Experience Theatre Project has carved a niche for itself in the world of immersive theater. Artistic Director Alisa Stewart was inspired by her experience at Shaking the Tree Theatre’s production of Masque of the Red Death, which introduced her to the transformative power of immersive storytelling. Stewart’s journey into theater began in her childhood in Alaska, leading her to pursue directing as a career.

Since its inception, Experience Theatre Project has gained attention for its innovative approach to theater. Last year, the company transitioned to a warehouse space adjacent to a feed store in Aloha, allowing for greater creativity and flexibility in their productions. This new venue has facilitated the staging of various immersive productions, including adaptations of classics such as Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray and Stephen King’s Misery.

Artistic Vision of Alisa Stewart

Stewart’s passion for directing and storytelling is evident in her approach to theater. She views herself as an artist with a blank canvas, emphasizing the importance of how stories are presented and felt by the audience. “If you can’t see what you’re going to create, and how it’s going to make people feel, you shouldn’t do it,” she states, highlighting her commitment to provoking emotions through performance.

Through her exploration of immersive theater, Stewart aims to eliminate the barrier between audience and performance, fostering a sense of community and shared experience. Research into innovative storytelling techniques, including visits to renowned companies like Punchdrunk in New York, has shaped her vision for the Experience Theatre Project.

Navigating Challenges

Despite its success, the company has faced significant hurdles, especially following the pandemic. The need for a dedicated space where the company could rehearse, build sets, and host community events became increasingly apparent. After moving from the Beaverton Masonic Lodge, which had limitations such as no backstage facilities, the search for a new home led them to the current warehouse location.

“We were taking a huge risk,” Stewart admits, referring to the decisions made during the transition. However, the new space has proven to be advantageous, allowing for more creative freedom and audience engagement. The warehouse’s flexible design has been instrumental in creating immersive environments for their productions.

Community Engagement and Future Plans

Experience Theatre Project is not only focused on theatrical productions but also on fostering connections within the community. After relocating, the company hosted a neighborhood carnival to introduce itself to locals and gather feedback on the types of performances they would like to see. Stewart’s goal is to incorporate the rich Latino heritage of the area into future programming, potentially offering bilingual productions.

As they prepare for their next show, Flanagan’s Wake, which includes live music and improvisational elements, the company is also looking ahead to the next season. Plans include a version of Neil Simon’s Rumors and a new play inspired by the life of Erik Satie, showcasing their commitment to innovation in theater.

Running until March 22, Flanagan’s Wake offers a unique experience, combining comedy and audience participation in a setting that reflects the vibrant culture of its community. The show features improvisation from company actors and live music, highlighting the diverse talents within the theater.

As the company continues to grow, Stewart’s vision remains clear: to create immersive, innovative theater that resonates with audiences. “This is why we do this,” she states, reflecting on the impact of their work. The theater aims not only to entertain but also to inspire and provoke thought through their performances.

Experience Theatre Project’s Flanagan’s Wake continues through March 22 at 18850 S.W. Alexander St., Aloha. Opening weekend performances are sold out, but tickets remain available for the rest of the run, including special St. Patrick’s Day performances on March 17.
