With the launch of its innovative “Transregional Asian Studies” program, the Pontifical Urbaniana University aims to foster experts in Asian affairs. Archyde News sat down with the program’s director, Dr. Eva Raveni, to discuss this groundbreaking initiative.
Dr. Eva Raveni: A Pioneer in Asian Studies
Dr. Eva Raveni, a leading academic in Asian studies, brings over two decades of experience to her role as program director. Her expertise spans multiple disciplines, including theology, politics, and international relations, making her the ideal catalyst for this multifaceted endeavor.
Rethinking Asian Studies: A Transregional Approach
Archyde News (AN): Dr. Raveni, what inspired the creation of the “Transregional Asian Studies” program?
Dr. Eva Raveni (ER): The interconnectedness of Asian cultures, economies, and politics has intensified in recent years. Yet, customary academic approaches frequently enough focus on individual countries or regions. this program aims to fill that gap, offering a holistic, transregional view of asia.
A Multidisciplinary Journey
AN: The curriculum combines subjects like theology, economics, and politics. Why such a diverse approach?
ER: Asia’s complexity demands it. From cultural sensitivities to economic dynamics, the region’s intricacies cannot be captured by a single disciplinary lens. By combining these perspectives, our program enables students to navigate Asia’s nuances more effectively.
From language to practice: Hands-On Learning
AN: The program emphasizes Asian languages and includes an internship. How do these aspects enhance students’ understanding?
ER: Language proficiency opens doors to authentic engagement, while internships provide practical insights. By integrating these components, our program equips students with the skills necessary to interact meaningfully with Asia’s diverse societies.
The asiaographies: A Regional Tour
AN: Initially, the program covers East and Southeast asia. What led to this regional focus, and where will future expansions take it?
ER: We started with East and southeast Asia due to their dynamic interdependencies and global influence. In the future, we plan to include South Asia, building a comprehensive Asiaography that connects these regions seamlessly.
AN: What advice would you give to those considering this program?
ER: Be prepared for intellectual challenge and growth. Our program is designed to evolve with Asia’s rapidly changing landscape. Embrace this dynamism, and you’ll gain a unique perspective on one of the world’s most vital continents.
Embracing Asia’s Complexity
AN: Lastly, dr. Raveni, what do you hope students will take away from this program?
ER: I hope they’ll develop a nuanced, holistic understanding of Asia – one that respects its diversity, appreciates its dynamism, and navigates its complexities. In essence, I hope they’ll emerge as true Asia experts, ready to engage meaningfully with the continent and its global impact.
