Extraction 3: Production Dates & Filming Location Revealed

Production is gearing up for a third installment in the popular action franchise, with Extraction 3 slated to begin filming in June 2026. The film will see Chris Hemsworth reprise his role as Tyler Rake, the Australian mercenary at the center of the high-stakes action. This next chapter marks a significant shift for the series, moving production to Australia and potentially incorporating European locations, a departure from the previous films’ settings in India, Thailand, and Prague.

According to production listings, principal photography for Extraction 3 is currently scheduled to commence in June 2026 and run through October 9th, 2026. While the start date remains subject to change, the move to Sydney, Australia, represents a “homecoming” for both Hemsworth and the production team, who originally hoped to film the second installment there before COVID-19 restrictions forced a relocation to the Czech Republic and Austria.

The decision to film in Australia allows director Sam Hargrave and Hemsworth to utilize the country’s diverse landscapes, offering a fresh aesthetic compared to the tropical environments of the first Extraction and the snowy industrial settings of the sequel. The first film recreated the streets of Dhaka, filming in Ahmedabad and Mumbai, India, and various locations in Thailand.

The “Action Dream Team” is returning for the third movie, with Hargrave back in the director’s chair. The Russo Brothers’ AGBO is producing, and Joe Russo is expected to handle screenwriting duties once again. Producers include Anthony Russo, Joe Russo, Mike Larocca, Angela Russo-Otstot, Eric Gitter, and Peter Schwerin. Fraser Taggart, known for his work on Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, will serve as cinematographer, and Sarah Finn, the casting director behind much of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is likewise attached to the project.

Expanding the ‘Extraction’ Universe

Netflix is not limiting the franchise to a trilogy. Following the success of Extraction 2, the streaming giant and the Russo Brothers have confirmed plans to expand the Extraction world into a broader cinematic universe. Joe Russo has indicated a desire to explore “more intriguing ways to tell these stories” beyond Tyler Rake’s individual journey.

Two spin-off projects are currently in development. Mercenary, an eight-episode series starring Omar Sy (known for Lupin), follows a mercenary on a high-stakes hostage rescue mission in Libya. The series, showrun by Glen Mazzara (The Walking Dead), reportedly began filming in North Africa in late 2025 and is expected to premiere before Extraction 3. A second spin-off film, Tygo, is set in South Korea and stars Don Lee (Train to Busan, Eternals). Directed by Lee Sang-yong, the film centers on Lee’s character, a former child soldier turned mercenary, and his quest for revenge within the Korean criminal underworld. Both projects were announced in late 2025.

Given the anticipated late 2026 wrap date for Extraction 3, a release on Netflix is likely sometime in Summer or Fall 2027.

The success of the Extraction franchise has prompted Netflix to seek out more productions in Australia, taking advantage of government incentives and tax breaks. This trend is benefiting the local film industry and providing opportunities for Australian crew and talent.

As production draws closer, further details regarding the plot and specific European filming locations are expected to be revealed. Fans of the action series can anticipate another adrenaline-fueled adventure with Tyler Rake in 2027.
