F1 Testing: Ferrari & Mercedes Lead, McLaren & Red Bull Close Behind

by Luis Mendoza - Sport Editor

The Formula 1 pre-season testing recently concluded, and while headline lap times often prove misleading, a clear picture is beginning to emerge: Ferrari and Mercedes appear to be the teams best positioned heading into the 2026 season. Charles Leclerc set the fastest overall lap time of the test, clocking in at a blistering pace, 0.811 seconds quicker than Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli. However, the true indicators of performance lay within the longer race simulation runs, where both teams consistently demonstrated strong pace and reliability.

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella underscored this assessment, stating on Friday evening, “This test has confirmed that Ferrari and Mercedes look like the teams to beat. McLaren and Red Bull [are] probably very similar, Ferrari and Mercedes a step ahead.” This sentiment was echoed by numerous other senior figures within the paddock, suggesting a potential shift in the competitive order after several seasons of Red Bull dominance.

The focus has shifted from outright lap speed to the more telling data gathered during race simulations. Teams run full grand prix distances with fueled cars, providing a more accurate representation of race performance than single-lap bursts. Leclerc topped the charts in the best race simulation of the week, marginally faster than Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, who had posted nearly identical times the previous day.

Mercedes also showcased impressive form, particularly during the first week of testing. Kimi Antonelli set the fastest race simulation time of the opening week, significantly outpacing Piastri. George Russell, considered a pre-season championship favorite by bookmakers, also demonstrated strong pace in warmer conditions. While Mercedes didn’t conduct race simulations in the second week due to track conditions being up to a second slower, their initial performance was a clear signal of intent.

Race Simulation Data Points to Ferrari and Mercedes Advantage

The accumulation of data from these race simulations led Stella and others to their conclusions. It’s important to note that McLaren wasn’t utilizing the latest specification of the Mercedes power unit during the test, with an expected performance uplift planned for the Australian Grand Prix when they switch to the updated engine. This suggests McLaren’s potential is even greater than what was observed during testing.

Red Bull’s new engine also appears promising, with George Russell noting its superior energy deployment – a crucial factor in the 2026 season. However, Mercedes faced some reliability concerns during the test, impacting Antonelli’s running more than Russell’s. Red Bull’s new recruit, Isack Hadjar, also experienced issues that limited his track time.

The reliability issues for Mercedes are a key area to watch. While Antonelli experienced more problems than Russell, the team generally encountered more setbacks than its primary rivals. Addressing these concerns will be paramount as the season approaches.

McLaren and Red Bull Remain in the Mix

Despite the strong showing from Ferrari and Mercedes, McLaren and Red Bull remain firmly in contention. The gap between the top two and the chasing pack appears relatively slight, and development throughout the season will undoubtedly play a crucial role in determining the ultimate pecking order. The Australian Grand Prix, with McLaren running the updated Mercedes power unit, will provide a more definitive indication of each team’s true potential.

Kimi Antonelli’s performance during the test was particularly noteworthy, despite the reliability hiccups. After the Dutch Grand Prix collision with Charles Leclerc in 2025, where Antonelli apologized to Ferrari for the incident as reported by the Associated Press, he demonstrated considerable pace and potential. He also admitted his mistake in the collision with Leclerc according to ScuderiaFans.

Charles Leclerc himself acknowledged Antonelli was “overly optimistic” during their collision at the Dutch Grand Prix, an incident that ultimately ended his race as detailed by Formula1.com. The incident highlighted the aggressive driving style of the young Mercedes driver, a trait that could prove both a strength and a weakness as he navigates his rookie season.

What’s Next for Formula 1?

The focus now shifts to the season opener in Bahrain. Teams will analyze the data collected during pre-season testing and implement further refinements to their cars. The Bahrain International Circuit will provide a more representative test of performance than the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, with its different track characteristics and climate. The first race weekend will offer the first real glimpse of the competitive landscape and set the stage for what promises to be a thrilling 2026 Formula 1 season.
