Three members of the same family were seriously injured on Friday morning following a fire in an apartment building in Kortenberg, Flemish Brabant. A six-year-old child and his parents were taken to hospital in critical condition, emergency services said.

The fire broke out shortly following 4 a.m. in an apartment on the ground floor of a building located on Dr. V. De Walsplein. When they arrived on scene, firefighters discovered the mother unconscious in the street, while the father and the six-year-old child were still in the apartment. They were taken out of the house by firefighters and resuscitated on site. The three family members were then transferred to hospital in critical condition.

The damage was significant in the affected apartment, which was declared temporarily uninhabitable.

The Leuven public prosecutor’s office has appointed a fire expert to shed light on the causes of the fire.
