The new images show details that are less than half a light year. This allowed them to observe the jet’s movements and measure its speed. Usually jets are straight. However, the new data show how it twists helically at its base as if it were turning around the corner. The scientists cannot yet explain why this happens. Possible explanations would be shock waves or magnetic fields that force the jet into its orbit.
20 times the speed of light
The structure of the jet changed a few days later. The researchers suspect that this happens through the collapse and comminution of matter on a rotating accretion disk, i.e. the rotating disk that transports material to the black hole. The measured 20 times the speed of light of the jet is enormous, but you have to take into account that Quasar 3C 297 is moving towards Earth. The actual speed should therefore be less than the speed of light.
Another EHT observation campaign was actually planned during March and April. However, this had to be canceled due to the Corona crisis. The black hole in the heart of our Milky Way should be observed. Now you are only concerned with evaluating the data already collected from 2018. In 2021 the next campaign will be carried out with an expanded network of a total of 11 radio telescopes.
