Dense fog caused a major pileup involving more than 160 cars, leaving 7 dead and at least 63 injured Monday in St. John the Baptist Parish, Louisiana.

Authorities confirmed on Saturday the results of this incident which occurred on the I-55 highway and which caused a large fire which spread between the vehicles involved, reports CNN.

Some 25 injured people had to be taken to hospital for treatment of injuries ranging from minor to critical.

A tanker truck carrying a flammable substance, the identification of which was not revealed by the authorities, would have contributed to fueling the blaze and accelerating its spread.

The dense fog responsible for poor visibility Monday was believed to have been caused by smoke from several nearby forest fires.

During the week, all the cars were removed from the road, but authorities were still working on Saturday cleaning up debris that was still on the road.
