One killed in shooting at Catholic church in Istanbul; Erdogan said that the accused will be arrested within 24 hours

Istanbul: One person was killed in a shooting incident at a Catholic church in Istanbul, Turkey. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the accused will be arrested within 24 hours. On Sunday, there was a shooting during worship at the Catholic Church of the Christian sect in Istanbul.

Turkish authorities have confirmed that two masked gunmen shot and killed a man. The attack took place in the Italian Santa Maria church in the northeast of Istanbul.

It appears that the killers deliberately targeted the victim. They covered their faces with masks and a thorough investigation has been launched. The attackers will be caught soon,’ Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said.

The governor of Istanbul, Davut Gul, said that the victim was a Turkish citizen and that no one else was injured in the incident.

Turkish President Erdogan expressed regret over the incident. He said that the killers will be found within four hours and necessary steps are being taken to find the accused.

Pope Francis has also expressed his condolences over the incident.

CCTV footage obtained by Turkish media clearly shows the killers entering the church. Two armed men are seen entering the church, followed by a man dressed in black, and then back out of the church.

His relative said that the murdered person wanted to become a Christian but had not been baptized.
