Fatal Shootout and Cocaine Seizure in Caribbean Sea: US Coast Guard Incident Update

The United States Coast Guard reported that a Dominican person was killed during a shootout once morest a fleeing boat in the Caribbean Sea that was smuggling cocaine worth an estimated $11 million.

The agency said Thursday that Coast Guard officers aboard a U.S. Navy vessel fired “warning and disabling shots” during the Jan. 1 incident and found an injured crew member when they boarded. .

The statement indicates that the person received first aid and was transferred for treatment to the Dominican Republic, where he died. The person was not identified.

Fatal shootings involving the Coast Guard are unusual.

“The Coast Guard takes any loss of life seriously and is working to investigate the incident,” said spokesman Lt. Commander John W. Beal.

Two other suspected traffickers were arrested and 385 kilograms (848 pounds) of cocaine were seized from the boat, according to the Coast Guard.
