Film review of “He flew ahead – Karl Schwacher”: Lonely visionary with a pull effect

The Austrian architect Karl Schwartzer (1918-1975) was considered one of the most important representatives of post-war architecture. Among other things, he built the Belvedere 21 (formerly the 20er or 21er house), the Philips house on the Wienerberg and the BMW headquarters in Munich.

Prominent architects such as Laurids Ortner, Heinz Neumann, Boris Podrecca, Wolf D. Prix von Coop Himmelb(l)bau and Andrea and Diether S. Hoppe were his students and employees. They regarded Hahner as a “samurai” among architects, as a visionary and as an inspiring professor at the Technical University of Vienna. But he was also originally Viennese, who had practically made it from a horse-drawn carriage to a millionaire and might also sing wonderfully. Karl Schwartzer’s personality unfolded a “powerful pull” – which can be clearly felt in Max Gruber’s materially rich, multifaceted “architectural poem”. In addition, Nicholas Ofczarek puts on thick glasses and slips into the role of the main character.
