Find of the century: Oldest runes discovered on knives in Denmark – Archeology

2024-01-22 17:00:11

An archaeological research team made a spectacular discovery in Denmark, not far from Odense, the country’s third largest city. Experts identified runes carved on a small knife, the oldest writing known from Scandinavia. As the Odense Museum reported on Monday, these are said to be the oldest runes in Denmark that have been found so far – a unique artifact. Given the difficulty of exact dating, people are probably cautious regarding using superlatives such as the “oldest runes in the world”. But even in international comparison there are very few objects decorated with runes that come from this period. The knife is dated to around 150, so it is around 2,000 years old.
