“You don’t know how happy I am today. For the first time in the history of this country, we managed to place a communist minister on the Supreme Court: a companion of the quality of Flávio Dino,” said Lula, at the opening of the IV National Youth Conference, in Brasilia.

The plenary session of the Senate approved on Wednesday the nomination of Dino, a 55-year-old lawyer who before making the leap into politics served for a decade as a federal judge, to fill the vacant position in the country’s highest judicial body, made up of eleven magistrates.

Dino’s candidacy, proposed by Lula as a constitutional imperative, received 47 votes in favor and 31 once morest in the plenary session of the Upper House, amid criticism from the opposition for his high political profile, his closeness to the president and his strong stance once morest the far-right former president Jair Bolsonaro.

Dino has been a deputy, governor of the state of Maranhão for two terms (2015-2022), elected senator in last year’s legislative elections and Minister of Justice since January 1.

His political career has always been linked to leftist formations, including the Communist Party of Brazil (PCdoB).

However, he already announced in a parliamentary commission that, as a Supreme Court judge, he will leave “political life in all its dimensions, even on social networks,” where he is quite active.

“Evidently I will not give my political opinion on political issues because that is absolutely incompatible,” he said.

Dino is the second name for the Supreme Court chosen by Lula since he returned to power.
following managing to place his former personal lawyer, Cristiano Zanin, in court in the middle of the year, who got him out of jail in the framework of corruption proceedings that were later annulled.

Dino will be able to serve as a Supreme Court judge for the next twenty years, until he turns 75.
