Floods in southern Thailand have killed at least 6 people and flooded tens of thousands of homes

Since the floods that started on December 22, more than 70,000 people have been affected. households in Satun, Songkhla, Patan, Yala and Narathiwat provinces, regional officials said.

Six people were killed in Narativat, including an 89-year-old woman and a small child, provincial deputy governor Preecha Nualnoi told AFP.

Another person remains missing following several days of heavy rains, which have caused floodwaters to reach three meters in some places, he said.

Local media footage showed flooded streets and residents forced to climb onto rooftops.

During the night, relief teams worked to distribute bottled water and snacks, and checked buildings for damage and injuries.

Thailand’s Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation said the water level had receded on Wednesday morning.

Some train services have resumed in Narathiwat province, which borders Malaysia, following several days of suspension, according to Deputy Governor Preecho Nualnoi.

The kingdom’s rainy season usually lasts for months, but scientists say human-induced climate change might make rainfall more intense.

In 2011, widespread flooding across the country killed hundreds of people and damaged millions of homes.
