Florida Gators: Brown & Wilson Impress Coaches in Sophomore Season Prep

by James Carter Senior News Editor

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Florida Gators’ wide receiver corps is generating significant buzz heading into the 2026 season, with latest coaches expressing considerable excitement about the potential of sophomores Vernell Brown III and Dallas Wilson. Both players demonstrated flashes of brilliance during their freshman campaigns, and are now impressing during offseason workouts, signaling a potential transformation for the Gators’ passing attack.

Despite playing in what was described as a “lackluster offense” in 2025, Brown III and Wilson quickly established themselves as key contributors. Now, under the guidance of inside receivers coach Trent McKnight and outside receivers coach Marcus Davis, the duo is refining their skills and demonstrating a maturity that belies their youth. The expectation is that they will be central figures in a rebuilt wide receiver unit expected to be among the SEC’s best in 2026.

Vernell Brown III, a legacy player – his father, Vernell Brown Jr., and grandfather, Vernell Brown Sr., both played for the Gators – immediately made an impact as a freshman, leading the team in receiving yards with 512 on 40 receptions in 10 games. According to Pro Football Focus (PFF), he too accumulated 277 yards after the catch. His versatility is a key attribute, according to McKnight.

“They think he can really play every position,” McKnight said. “He can play inside, outside. He can play F, Z or X, and then, 10 personnel, can get into some of the Y stuff.” Brown III’s ability to line up in multiple formations – playing 57.8 percent of snaps in the slot and 40.7 percent out wide – proved effective in maximizing his opportunities. McKnight also highlighted Brown III’s work ethic and leadership qualities, noting a “pro mindset” and eagerness to learn.

Dallas Wilson’s impact, while limited by injury in 2025, was undeniable. After missing the start of the season, Wilson made a spectacular debut against Texas, recording six receptions for 111 yards and two touchdowns, including a 55-yard score where he shrugged off multiple defenders. Despite appearing in only four games, he finished with 12 catches for 174 yards and three touchdowns.

Wilson’s Physicality and Football IQ Impress Coaches

Coaches are particularly impressed with Wilson’s physical attributes and football intelligence. Standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing 213 pounds, Wilson presents a significant mismatch for opposing defensive backs. “I think one of the best things that he’s got going for himself is play-strength, super strong guy,” explained Davis. Beyond his size, Wilson’s ability to quickly grasp concepts is also noteworthy. “He’s another guy that’s super smart. You question him a question one time, or you tell him to do something one time, he’s like a sponge,” Davis added.

The Gators prioritized retaining both Brown III and Wilson following their promising freshman seasons, as reported by 247Sports. Their continued development under the new coaching staff is seen as crucial to the team’s offensive success.

Looking Ahead to the 2026 Season

The combination of Brown III’s versatility and Wilson’s physicality and intelligence offers a dynamic duo that could significantly elevate the Florida Gators’ passing game. With spring practice on the horizon, McKnight expressed his eagerness to observe both players in action. “I can’t wait to really see both of them out there in spring and make plays,” he said. The Gators’ success in the SEC will likely hinge, in part, on the continued growth and performance of these two promising wide receivers.

As the team prepares for the 2026 season, all eyes will be on Brown III and Wilson to see if they can fulfill their potential and become the cornerstone of a revitalized Florida offense.
