GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The No. 14 Florida Gators continued their dominant run through the Southeastern Conference, defeating No. 25 Kentucky 92-83 Saturday afternoon at a sold-out Exactech Arena/O’Connell Center. The victory marks Florida’s fifth consecutive win and their 10th in the last 11 games, solidifying their position atop the SEC standings. This win also ended a six-game losing streak at home against the Wildcats, a series that had favored Kentucky since 2018.
Florida’s offensive firepower was on full display, led by guards Xaivian Lee and Urban Klavzar, who combined for 41 points. The Gators’ performance underscored their status as a leading contender in the conference, and nationally, as they navigate a challenging schedule with momentum on their side. The win creates some separation between the Gators and the Wildcats, who were previously tied for second place in the SEC.
Lee, fresh off an 18-point performance at Georgia three days prior, reached a new career high with 22 points, shooting 7-of-12 from the field and 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. Klavzar, coming off the bench, contributed a career-best 19 points in the second half, sinking five 3-pointers on 11 attempts. The Gators’ balanced attack also saw significant contributions from junior forward Thomas Haugh (17 points, 8 rebounds) and a double-double performance from junior center Rueben Chinyelu (10 points, 11 rebounds), alongside Alex Condon (14 points, 11 rebounds).
Former Florida point guard Denzel Aberdeen, returning to Gainesville for the first time since leading the Gators to an NCAA title, led Kentucky with 19 points, but struggled with his shooting, going 8-for-21 from the field and 1-for-6 from three-point range. Florida never trailed in the contest, shooting 45.5% overall and 35.7% from the three-point line (10-of-28). They also controlled the boards, outrebounding Kentucky 45-37.
Gators Maintain SEC Lead
The win improves Florida’s record to 19-6 overall and 10-2 in SEC play, maintaining their one-game lead over Arkansas and a two-game advantage over Kentucky (17-8, 8-4). Kentucky mounted a challenge in the second half, closing the gap to as little as four points, but Florida responded with key runs to extend their lead and ultimately secure the victory. The Wildcats turned the ball over 14 times, resulting in 25 points for the Gators.
Key to Victory: Three-Point Shooting and Rebounding
A significant factor in Florida’s success was their ability to knock down three-pointers. The Gators have now hit at least 10 three-pointers in consecutive games for the first time this season, shooting 10-for-26 at Georgia on Wednesday and 10-for-28 against Kentucky. This improved three-point shooting, combined with their dominance on the glass, proved to be a winning formula. According to data from the game, Florida’s rebounding advantage was 45-37.
Up Next for Florida and Kentucky
Florida will return to action Tuesday, hosting South Carolina (11-13, 2-9) at Exactech Arena. The Gators previously defeated the Gamecocks 95-48 on January 28 in Columbia, marking their most lopsided road conference victory in program history. Kentucky will also be in action Tuesday, hosting Georgia. The Wildcats will look to rebound from this loss and regain ground in the SEC standings.
The Gators’ continued success hinges on maintaining their offensive efficiency and defensive intensity as they navigate the remainder of the SEC schedule. The upcoming rematch against South Carolina presents an opportunity to further solidify their position at the top of the conference.
