GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The University of Florida men’s basketball team will enter the 2026 NCAA Tournament as a No. 1 seed in the South Region, the selection committee announced Sunday evening. This marks the second consecutive year the Gators have received a top seed, a first in program history, and positions them as strong contenders to repeat as national champions after their 2025 title run.
The Gators (26-7) will begin their tournament journey against the winner of Wednesday’s First Four matchup between No. 16 seeds Lehigh (18-16) and Prairie View A&M (18-17) on Friday at the Benchmark International Arena in Tampa, Florida. Florida is hoping to capitalize on the home-court advantage as they pursue another championship.
Lehigh secured their tournament berth by winning the Patriot League Championship Tournament, defeating Boston University 74-60. The Mountain Hawks are led by junior guard Nasir Whitlock, who averages 21.0 points per game although shooting 47.6% from the field. Prairie View A&M earned their spot through a victory in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship Tournament, beating Southern 72-66. The Panthers boast two players averaging over 18 points per game: senior guards Dontae Horne (20.2) and Tai’Reon Joseph (18.2).
Regional Breakdown and Potential Matchups
Should Florida advance past the first round, they would face the winner of the game between No. 8 seed Clemson and No. 9 seed Iowa on Sunday, also in Tampa. Houston (28-6) earned the No. 2 seed in the South Region, setting up a potential rematch with the Gators in the regional final, scheduled for March 26 and 28 at the Toyota Center in Houston. Florida defeated Houston 65-63 in the 2025 NCAA Tournament Championship game, marking a significant victory.
A familiar opponent could await the Gators in the Sweet 16: No. 5 seed Vanderbilt (26-8). The Commodores recently defeated Florida 91-74 in the SEC Tournament, eliminating them from contention for the conference title. Nebraska (26-6) is the No. 4 seed, and Illinois (24-8) claimed the No. 3 seed in the region. Other teams in the South Region include North Carolina (24-8), Saint Mary’s (27-5), Texas A&M (21-11), and Virginia Commonwealth (27-7).
Statistical Insights and Tournament Outlook
Prairie View A&M is noted as one of the fastest-paced teams in the nation, ranking No. 8 in adjusted tempo, according to KenPom. This could present a challenge for Florida, which ranks No. 28 in the same category, potentially leading to a high-scoring contest. Lehigh shoots an effective 36.5% from three-point range, exceeding Florida’s 30.8% mark from beyond the arc, a factor that could influence the early rounds of the tournament.
The South Region also includes McNeese State (28-5), Troy (22-11), Pennsylvania (18-11), and Idaho (21-14). The SEC is well-represented in the tournament with a total of 10 teams participating, including Arkansas, Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Missouri, Tennessee, and Texas A&M.
Florida’s journey to a potential second consecutive national championship will require navigating a challenging bracket. The team closed out the regular season on an 11-game winning streak before their loss to Vanderbilt, and earned the SEC regular season title for the first time since 2014. Head coach Todd Golden felt his team deserved the No. 1 seed despite the loss.
The Gators will need to rely on their strong overall performance and experience to overcome potential obstacles and advance through the tournament. The coming weeks will determine if they can build upon their success and secure another NCAA championship title.
