A Florida man might receive the death penalty for child sexual abuse charges.

A sentence like this, if carried out, would be the first since Gov. Ron DeSantis passed a law allowing the death penalty in such cases when the jury recommended it by an 8-4 vote in April last.

Joseph Andrew Giampa, 36, was charged with six counts of sexual battery of a person under the age of 12 and three counts of promoting sexual conduct by a child, the Office of the Commissioner said. Florida State Attorney.

“The decision to pursue the greater sentence reflects the seriousness of the charges and the State Attorney’s Office’s desire to hold criminals accountable for their actions,” the statement read.
