The survey, carried out among 1070 adults in French-speaking Switzerland, emphasizes a deep desire for stricter regulations to safeguard young people from the tobacco industry’s influence.

Public Perception: Tobacco Industry’s Excessive Influence

Two-thirds of respondents expressed concerns about the tobacco industry’s excessive influence on Swiss policy. A profound worry lies in the industry’s marketing strategies targeting young people, with 88% acknowledging that appealing colors, relaxing aromas, and positive images used in advertising render tobacco products attractive. Moreover, 82% believe these products wrongly convey an impression of low danger.

Exposure to Advertising and Industry Influence

83% of respondents recalled having seen tobacco advertising, identifying supermarkets, kiosks, and festive places such as festivals and bars as primary sources. The visibility of various forms of nicotine product ads, from conventional cigarettes to electronic and disposable devices, underscores the need for stringent marketing controls.

Citing Responsible Business Initiatives as Deceptive

80% of the participants criticized the industry’s “responsible business” initiatives, labeling them as attempts to improve the industry’s image. Similarly, 83% think the tobacco industry exerts too much influence on public policies, with two-thirds of respondents believing that parliamentarians prioritize the industry’s interests over public health.

Demands for Stronger Prevention Measures

The survey reveals that 88% of respondents support stringent anti-tobacco measures. A significant majority backs rigorous age control for online purchases (92%), a ban on disposable electronic cigarettes (84%), and the complete prohibition of tobacco advertising (79%). An overwhelming consensus favors tobacco-free outdoor spaces, including playgrounds, sports fields, and swimming pools.

“These results indicate that the Swiss population wants more ambitious health promotion measures. It’s very encouraging,” says Luc Lebon, head of smoking prevention at Unisanté. As the war on tobacco continues, the public’s call for stronger measures signals a paradigm shift in how Switzerland addresses public health concerns.

For eight out of ten people, smoking is seen more as an addiction than a personal choice. This sentiment is echoed by 70% of current smokers. If given a chance to revisit their decision, 76% would likely not smoke again, highlighting the enduring emotional and health benefits of quitting.
