Foreign Minister Andrés Allamand is elected as the new Ibero-American Secretary General | International

The Chilean Chancellor, Andrés Allamand, was elected this Friday as the new Ibero-American Secretary General during the meeting of foreign ministers that takes place in the Dominican capital.

The chancellor of Guatemala, Pedro Brolo, also aspired to the position; the former president of Ecuador Rosalía Arteaga, and the former Peruvian minister José Antonio García Belaúnde.

Allamand will replace Rebeca Grynspan, designated secretary general of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (Unctad).

The vote in which Allamand was appointed, which was held in the framework of a meeting of Ibero-American Foreign MinistersIt was very close and it was decided by a majority, according to diplomatic sources consulted by Efe.

However, the Ibero-American General Secretariat (Segib) later reported that the new general secretary was elected by acclamation.

At a later press conference, Allamand said that the Ibero-American Secretary General has “an intense agenda” ahead of him and that Ibero-America “needs greater political cohesion” to overcome the current situation imposed by the pandemic, that has revealed “gaps and fractures existing in our society.”

Although the inauguration of the new secretary general is scheduled for April 2022, the date on which the four-year term for which Grynspan was elected would be completed, the Chilean diplomat said he will “do everything possible” to advance his swearing-in.

The Chilean Foreign Minister will be the third head of the Segib since the creation of this body in 2005, after the Uruguayan Enrique Iglesias, who held the position until 2014, and the Costa Rican Grynspan.

The meeting of Ibero-American Foreign Ministers was held this Friday in the capital of the Dominican Republic, with a view to organizing the XXVIII Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government to be held in this country in November 2022.
