Forest Fire Evacuation on La Palma Island: 2,000 People Forced to Flee as Heat Wave Intensifies – Latest Updates

At least 2,000 people have been evacuated on the island of La Palma, in the west of the Canary archipelago, in Spain, due to a forest fire, authorities announced on Saturday.

The southernSpain is currently facing a heat wave and temperatureswhich exceeded last week the 40 degreesshould continue to climb.

The fire, which broke out in the early hours of Saturday in the north of the island of The Palmis currently out of control and has forced the authorities to order evacuations.

At least 12 homes have been destroyed, Canary Islands President Fernando Clavijo said.

“The number of people who might be evacuated might increase. It will depend on our ability to control high winds,” he told reporters.

4,500 hectares burned

Next to 4,500 hectares of land were affected by the fire.

The Spanish army has deployed 150 of its firefighters on site to help local firefighters fight the blaze.

Additional firefighters from the neighboring island of Tenerife are also expected, said Fernando Clavijo.
