Vienna (OTS) – When people talk regarding refugees in connection with Israel, they usually only think of the approximately 700,000 Arabs who became refugees during the Israeli War of Independence in 1948/49.

What has largely been forgotten is that, at the same time, at least as many Jews were forced to flee Arab countries and Iran. Within a very short time, Jewish communities, some of which had a history that went back thousands of years, practically ceased to exist. Most of these Jewish refugees found a new home in Israel.

In the new Mena Watch publication “Forgotten Tragedy: The Jewish ‘Nakba’. Raimund Fastenbauer, author and former Secretary General of the Federal Association of Jewish Religious Communities in Austria, devotes himself to this chapter of history, which is unknown to many, “The Expulsion of Jews from Arab Countries and Iran”.

Fastenbauer describes the long prehistory and offers a reminder of the “forgotten tragedy” in ten country profiles – from Morocco in the west to Iran in the east. And it illustrates how differently the international community has treated the refugee story of Arabs and Jews to this day. “In stark contrast to the seemingly omnipresent narrative of the Palestinian ‘Nakba’,” Fastenbauer sums up, “the expulsion and extermination of Jewish communities in the Arab countries and Iran are almost non-existent in public discourse.”
