Mary Lou Retton, former Olympic gymnastics champion, suffers from pneumonia and is in intensive care in a Texas hospital.

Retton’s daughter, McKenna Kelley, revealed the former gymnast’s condition on Tuesday in a post on Instagram. She said Retton, 55, who was the first American to win the Olympic all-around title, is “fighting for her life” and can’t breathe on her own.

Kelley started a fundraising campaign for Retton to cover his medical expenses. She wrote that Retton does not currently have health insurance.

Retton was 16 when she became an icon of the US Olympic movement during her gold-winning performance at the 1984 Los Angeles Games. The athlete, who grew up in Fairmont, West Virginia, also won two silvers and a pair of bronzes. in those Olympics.
