Former Socialist Mayor Alain Mathot Ordered to Pay 700,000 Euros: Intriguing Legal Battle Unfolds

Justice has ruled. The former socialist mayor of Seraing Alain Mathot is ordered to pay 700,000 euros in civil interest to Intradel. The intercommunal waste management company manages the Herstal incinerator whose contract award was subject to corruption.

Alain Mathot was sentenced to 12 months in prison, a 5-year forfeiture of his civil and political rights and confiscation of 700,000 euros. According to justice, this amount represents the price of corruption in the award of the market for the Herstal incinerator to the French company Innova. It remained to be seen who would be awarded the 700,000 euros. Intradel had requested them, presenting itself as the major aggrieved in this matter.

Heritage assets rather than a transfer?

Does Alain Mathot have this amount? The man recently declared himself insolvent, which worries Intradel. The file is therefore not finished. Especially since, according to Intradel’s lawyer, the amount that the intermunicipal company must recover would be twice as large if we add interest. Intradel fears it will never see this money. She therefore asks the courts to recover Alain Mathot’s property already seized by the courts, but also any future seizures. Normally, these assets go to the State. Intradel’s request will be debated at a hearing on January 19.
