Minuto30.com .- On the night of Monday, August 5, 2024, there was a mass escape of prisoners from the 5th courtyard of the El Pedregal prison, located in Medellín.

This incident marks the second major escape in the history of the prison complex, which had already been the scene of a similar situation in November 2010, just a few months after the inauguration of the medium-security facility.

Local authorities are on an intense search to recapture the four inmates who managed to escape during the night.

In an official statement, Jorge Alberto Carmona Vélez, head of national penitentiary oversight and defender of human rights of the prison population in the department of Antioquia, said that work is being done quickly to locate the fugitives and guarantee the safety of the community.

The incident has caused great concern among both citizens and authorities, who are evaluating possible flaws in the prison’s security system in order to prevent future escapes and improve the conditions of custody in the establishment.
