Freenow & Taxi Garmisch-Partenkirchen: Ride-Hailing Expands in Bavaria

Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany – Residents and visitors in the Zugspitze region now have a new way to book taxis, as Freenow by Lyft launched its service in the Bavarian town on March 12, 2026. The expansion brings digital taxi hailing to a popular tourist destination, connecting local taxi operators with a wider customer base through the Freenow app.

The partnership between Freenow and the Garmisch-Partenkirchen Taxi Association e.V. Aims to improve accessibility and ease of dispatch, particularly during peak seasons when demand for taxis surges. This collaboration represents a growing trend of integrating traditional taxi services with modern technology to enhance the passenger experience.

Werdenfelser Land, the district encompassing Garmisch-Partenkirchen, is a significant tourist hub, welcoming over 540,000 guests in 2024, according to local records. The area also draws over 25,000 spectators annually for the New Year’s ski jumping event, part of the prestigious Four Hills Tournament. With approximately 28,000 inhabitants as of September 30, 2025, the region faces unique transportation challenges during these events.

Digital Convenience for Tourists and Locals

The Freenow app allows users to order a taxi with a few clicks, providing real-time tracking of the vehicle’s location and estimated arrival time. Passengers can choose to pay either cashlessly via the app – using methods like credit cards or PayPal – or with traditional cash payment. This digital platform is designed to streamline the taxi booking process and offer greater convenience for both residents and the influx of tourists.

Local Taxi Association Embraces Technology

The Garmisch-Partenkirchen Taxi Association e.V. Is comprised of 60 independently owned and operated vehicles, ranging from standard sedans and station wagons to larger 6- to 8-seater buses and all-wheel-drive vehicles. The association also provides specialized services such as airport transfers and tours to local castles. Freenow has provided training and technical integration to ensure a smooth transition for the taxi businesses onto the platform.

According to the company, the integration allows drivers to access a broader customer base without relinquishing their independence. The association views the partnership as a way to modernize their services and remain competitive in the evolving transportation landscape.

Expansion Across Southern Upper Bavaria

The launch in Garmisch-Partenkirchen is part of a broader strategy by Freenow to expand its network throughout southern Upper Bavaria. The company is actively seeking to onboard additional taxi companies in the region, offering them a digital channel to connect with passengers. Freenow is currently active in nine European markets and over 180 cities, and was acquired by Lyft in July 2025, expanding its global reach to nearly 1,000 cities across six continents. Lyft completed the acquisition of FreeNow from Mercedes-Benz and BMW, bolstering its position in the European mobility market.

Freenow, led by CEO Thomas Zimmermann, functions as a digital intermediary between taxi companies and passengers. The company’s headquarters are located in Hamburg.

As Freenow continues to integrate into the transportation ecosystem of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the focus will be on optimizing the service and expanding its reach to neighboring towns. The success of this initial rollout will likely influence the pace of expansion throughout southern Upper Bavaria.
