From April: $2.5 billion for the production of electric cars in Britain

The Japanese company Nissan Motor intends to boost the production of electric cars in Britain by pumping investments of two billion pounds ($2.5 billion) into its factory in the British city of Sunderland.

Nissan said on Friday that it will establish another battery factory and produce electric versions of its Qashqai and Juke cars in Britain.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak praised Nissan’s plans, calling them “a huge vote of confidence in the British car industry.”

Bloomberg reported that the decision comes following the Tata Motors Group, owner of Jaguar Land Rover, announced the construction of a battery factory worth 4 billion pounds in Somerset, and the decision of the German company BMW to manufacture an electric model of the Mini car at its factory in Oxford.

It is worth noting that car production at Nissan’s Sunderland plant has declined by almost half from its peak in 2016, when it produced more than 500,000 cars.
