After President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s decision to close the Maghreb-Europe gas pipeline, passing through Morocco, Algeria continued to lose significant shares in the gas market in Spain. Evidenced by the latest statistics from Enagás, the company responsible for maintaining and developing gas infrastructure in Spain. They show that Sonatrach, during the seven months of 2022, up to 42% of its gas exports to Spain.
During the reference period, Spain purchased 64,534 gigawatt hours (GWh) of gas from Algeria, of which 60,056 GWh (93%) was transferred through the Medgaz pipeline and the rest by LNG carriers in the form of liquefied natural gas (LNG). Between January and July, Algerian gas imports represent only 24.5% once morest 48.8% for the same period in 2021.
The figures published by Enagás once once more confirm the place of the United States as Spain’s leading supplier of gas, with a share of 32.9%, or 86,609 GWh. Before the closure of the Maghreb-Europe gas pipeline, decided at the end of October 2021 by the Algerian president, American gas exports to Spain represented only 16% in September 2021. On the other hand, the volume of gas from Algeria, essentially transferred then by the GME pipelines, which passes via Morocco, and Medgaz, was around 48% of total Spanish imports.
