G. Nausėda will discuss regional security, the country’s progress in carrying out reforms with the head of Sakartvelo

The heads of state will also talk about Sakartvel’s progress in carrying out reforms and implementing the recommendations of the European Commission.

The last time the manager of Sakartvelo visited Vilnius was in April.

S. Zurabišvili arrives in Lithuania at the time when Sakartvelo’s ruling party “Sakartvelo’s Dream” initiates the impeachment procedure against her. For its part, the opposition is worried that Tbilisi is again turning its back on Europe and starting to strengthen ties with Russia.

The impeachment is initiated due to the president’s trips to Europe, which were not coordinated with the government. The impeachment of the president requires 100 votes of members of parliament, but “Sakartvel’s dream” does not have that number of votes.

If the impeachment is successful, S. Zurabishvili, who has been in office since 2018 as president, whose role is essentially representative, may be removed from office.

Sakartvel has been seeking integration into the European Union for many years, and this process accelerated after the brief war with Russia in 2008.

Last March, Sakartvel together with Moldova submitted applications for the status of candidates for the European Union. Ukraine also submitted such an application a little earlier.

In June 2022, EU member states granted this status to Ukraine and Moldova, but not to Sakartvel, stating that this country still needs to work.
