Gaumont Navigates the AI Landscape While celebrating 130 Years of Innovation

Gaumont, the world’s oldest continuously operating production studio,is turning 130 this year and navigating the evolving landscape of the entertainment industry, including the burgeoning debate around AI “actors.” Speaking at Iberseries & Platino Industria in madrid, Gaumont’s L.A.-based President of U.S. and SPLATAM, Nicolas Atlan, addressed the controversy surrounding AI, and also providing updates on the studio’s future projects, including Narcos and Lupin.

While stopping short of directly commenting on the recent uproar regarding AI actresses like Tilly Norwood, Atlan acknowledged the importance of considering the technology. “Of course, we look at it,” he stated. He highlighted two primary concerns: protecting the copyright and intellectual property of Gaumont’s extensive catalog and viewing AI’s potential as a tool.

“At the same time, we see it as a tool. For animation, it’s going to be a big tool. In production, it is going to be a very important tool, too, so it’s how to use the technology to tell stories that travel all around the world,” Atlan explained.

The discussion comes as talent agencies begin to circle the AI creation, norwood, created by technologist Eline Van der Velden.

Gaumont also shared news regarding the voice cast for Paul McCartney’s animated film High in the Clouds, adapted from his 2005 children’s book. The French-language cast features Celine Dion, Omar Sy, Benjamin Lavernhe, Antoine de Caunes, Clémence Poésy, Pom Klementieff, and Alain Chabat. The English-language version stars Himesh Patel and Hannah Waddington, with contributions from McCartney and Ringo Starr.

Responding to a question about the future of Narcos, a series that launched Gaumont on the U.S. stage, Atlan noted its impact. He observed that the show opened doors to international content, suggesting that it is a benchmark to measuring current and upcoming series.

The studio is also known for the series Lupin, and continues to seek opportunities in the production of high-quality, global series and films.
