Tbilisi, July 4 (EFE).- The leader of the Georgian Dream, the ruling formation in Georgia, Irakli Kobajidze, affirmed today that “there are no reasons” to deny the country the status of a candidate for the European Union (EU), which the Twenty-seven in June last year were awarded to Ukraine and Moldova.

“We have complied in principle with the twelve EU recommendations. There are no reasons not to grant Georgia candidate country status,” Kobajidze told a news conference.

At the same time, the Georgian Dream leader indicated that in the time remaining until December, when the EU will decide on granting Georgia the status of candidate country, it will hold consultations with the Twenty-seven on the “implementation of a series of recommendations already fulfilled”.

“Georgia already last year was ready to receive the status of a candidate country, but next December the EU will take a political decision,” he stressed.

He added that failure to obtain candidate status would be a “very bad sign” for Georgia and would be a disappointment to Georgian society.

“The main risk is that the decision on the status must be approved by all the members of the EU, and it will be enough that only one does not do so to truncate the Georgian aspiration,” admitted Kobajidze,

In any case, he pointed out that while achieving candidate country status will not end political polarization, it will introduce “fundamental changes in the general political atmosphere.”

The Georgian opposition accuses the government of slowing down the process of integration with the EU and of cooperating with Russia. EFE
