Ghetto Zombies: Graffiti Squad Launches on Xbox with Fast-Paced Action & Style

by Sophie Lin - Technology Editor

A vibrant, pixelated world overrun by the undead is the setting for Ghetto Zombies: Graffiti Squad, a new action shooter that launched today exclusively on Xbox Series X|S. Developed by Fogo Games and published by Nuntius Games, the title isn’t just another addition to the zombie genre; it’s a bold, culturally-rooted experience drawing heavily from Brazilian urban culture and music. The game blends fast-paced combat with a unique progression system centered around graffiti art, offering players a fresh take on surviving the apocalypse.

Ghetto Zombies: Graffiti Squad places players in the role of graffiti artists fighting to reclaim their city from a horde of bizarre, “Rick & Morty”-style zombies. According to Fabio Cacho, Creative Director of Fogo Games, the game’s inspiration stems from a deeply personal place – imagining how communities on the outskirts of Brazilian cities would cope with a zombie outbreak. This personal connection translates into a game world brimming with authentic details, from the neighborhoods depicted to the music that underscores the action.

The gameplay loop revolves around intense, short sessions of combat, strategic territory control through graffiti, and constant character progression. Players navigate four chapters, each containing around ten stages and culminating in a challenging boss encounter. These aren’t one-off battles, but; the zombie bosses return in each chapter, evolving with new abilities and transformations, forcing players to adapt their strategies.

One of the game’s most striking features is its arsenal. Players have access to over 60 weapons, expanding to more than 70 with special variations, ranging from conventional firearms to wildly inventive creations like a ketchup blaster, a gumball shooter, and explosive spray cans. This creativity extends to the enemy design, with 22 distinct zombie types exhibiting unique attack patterns and behaviors. Xbox News highlights the game’s addictive and challenging combat, designed for both short bursts of action and long-term engagement.

Beyond the main campaign, Ghetto Zombies: Graffiti Squad offers an “Endless Training Mode” designed for players seeking mastery and experimentation. This mode features infinite waves of randomized enemies, escalating difficulty, and a robust upgrade system allowing players to fine-tune their character’s attributes and abilities.

A Culturally Rich Experience

The game’s identity is further strengthened by its original soundtrack, inspired by Brazilian music and urban rhythms. This sonic landscape complements the striking pixel art aesthetic, creating an immersive and distinctive atmosphere. The graffiti-based progression system isn’t merely a gameplay mechanic; it’s a core element of the game’s narrative and world-building, allowing players to visually reclaim the city and unlock new areas and challenges.

Launching as an Xbox exclusive was a strategic decision for the development team. Cacho explained that Xbox’s investment and the support from the ID@Xbox program were crucial to the game’s success. “Releasing exclusively on Xbox is a way of putting real care and dedication into a launch that’s very special to us,” he stated. “Xbox invested a significant amount into the project, and the ID@Xbox team supported us constantly through training and initiatives to promote the game.” GamesPress reports that the launch expands the game’s reach following its positive reception on Steam.

What to Expect from Ghetto Zombies

At its heart, Ghetto Zombies: Graffiti Squad is about embracing energy, curiosity, and style. Cacho hopes players will experience “a mix between the urge to blow up zombie heads and the curiosity of finding out what a gum ball gun can actually do.” The game is currently available for $9.99. Players for Life describes the game as a “hilarious post-apocalyptic adventure.”

With its launch on Xbox Series X|S, Ghetto Zombies: Graffiti Squad establishes itself as a creatively fearless and culturally resonant addition to the zombie genre. The game’s success also marks a significant milestone for Brazilian indie development and Nuntius Games’ expansion into the console market. The team’s focus now shifts to supporting the game post-launch and engaging with the player community.
