Google Maps is providing more detailed information on bicycle journeys, including the presence of cycle paths, heavy traffic areas, and steep slopes. This feature is initially available in nine European cities, including Brussels, Milan, and Madrid. The goal is to cover 125,000 km of cycle paths worldwide, encouraging more people to choose cycling as a mode of transport.
Promoting Walking and Public Transport
For those who prefer walking or public transport, Google Maps will now recommend these options when they are as fast as driving. This feature, already deployed in over 60 cities, will soon expand to Copenhagen, Stockholm, Warsaw, and other major European metropolises. Google reports that this initiative has already helped avoid tens of millions of car trips, benefiting both the environment and public health.
Fuel-Efficient Routes for Drivers
For those who must drive, Google Maps offers optimized routes that consume less fuel. This feature, used for 500 million journeys each month, has helped avoid the emission of 2.7 million tonnes of CO₂ in 2024, equivalent to removing 630,000 cars from the road for a year. Cities like London and Berlin already display alerts for low-emission areas, and this will soon expand to over 1,000 such areas across Europe.
Green Light Project Expansion
Google is also extending its Green Light project to Vilnius, Lithuania. This AI-powered technology optimizes traffic light synchronization to reduce traffic jams and CO₂ emissions. Vilnius joins 20 other cities worldwide benefiting from this innovative solution.
