Government enters project for elections in two days – La Discusión 2024-04-23 12:00:34

This Tuesday, the Government submitted to the Senate, with great urgency, the announced bill that, at the request of the Electoral Service, provides that the elections for mayors, councilors, governors and regional councilors at the end of October be held in two days, on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27.

Servel’s position is based on the fact that, according to its estimates, mandatory voting, the four parallel elections and the large size of the ballots will make the process more cumbersome and would force it to extend its usual length by around five hours if it were limited. only on Sunday, as is traditional.

The Minister Secretary General of the Presidency, Álvaro Elizalde, explained that “this project establishes the maintenance of the inalienable holiday for the election day on Sunday, and an ordinary holiday is established for Saturday.”

“In addition to the election in two days, the elimination of the prohibition on the sale of alcohol during the days of electoral processes is established,” indicated the former senator.

On the other hand, “the campaign is regulated through social networks and digital platforms, mainly linked (this) to the spending limit,” and the number of secret chamber voting locations will be increased.

According to these guidelines, the old “prohibition law” will not apply and businesses will be able to operate normally on Saturday.

Looking ahead to the start of the process, the UDI maintains its apprehensions: “In principle, we do not think it is a project to take the elections to two days,” said Senator Sergio Gahona.

If it materializes, the parliamentarian added, “several aspects must be considered: among them, that the country cannot be paralyzed for two days; Commerce has to be open, and we also have to consider that, since there will be a double shift for the members, there has to be economic remuneration based on it.”
