This was the fear of many residents who live along the rivers damaged during the July 2021 floods: having to pay out of pocket to repair the banks located on their property. So far nothing was clear, there was doubt, but in the end it is not, it is the Walloon government that will take care of it.
The Walloon Minister-President, Elio Di Rupo announced it this morning at a press conference “we will not charge the share that should have been paid by local residents and local authorities who own the affected banks located at the bottom of their gardens or their land”. According to the socialist, logic would have wanted residents and municipalities to pay for these repairs. “but given the drama and the misfortune that these populations have endured, the government has decided not to make them pay. The public authority, in such dramatic circumstances, had to make an extra effort”. This effort is estimated at 105 million euros.
