Government wants to motivate young people to consume more alcohol

The state complains regarding lower income from the sale of alcohol. Now people are looking for creative ideas to stop the trend.

The Japanese government is apparently trying to motivate young people to drink more alcohol once more. According to multiple media reports, the National Tax Agency has launched a contest titled “Sake Viva!” was launched to collect ideas on how alcohol consumption can be boosted once more.

The background to the competition, which is aimed at people aged 20 to 39, is said to be low tax revenue from the sale of alcohol. According to the newspaper “Japan Times”, in 1980 alcohol revenue accounted for 5 percent of all tax revenue; In 2020, the share is said to have been 1.7 percent.

The suspected causes are the corona pandemic and the increasing aging of the population in Japan. According to the World Bank, around 29 percent of all Japanese are aged 65 or older, leading the global statistics.
