Grenoble Wins Prestigious Local Sustainability Award for Place (s) to Children
On Wednesday, June 25, Grenoble made headlines as it was presented with the 2025 Local Sustainability Award by ICLEI Europe and its partners, recognizing its exceptional project aimed at creating safe and sustainable spaces for children near schools.
Grenoble’s Innovative ‘Place (s) to Children’ Initiative
The project, dubbed ‘Place (s) to Children,’ is a collaborative effort between Grenoble Alpes Métropole and the Association rue de l’Avenir. It focuses on transforming streets adjacent to schools into secure, car-free zones which greatly reduce noise and air pollution. These spaces are designed to promote water infiltration and reduce summer heat, also including drinking water fountains for easy access.
To date, 13 ‘place (s) for children’ have been established, with plans to add 18 more next year. This initiative has resulted in the planting of 138 trees, the creation of 6000m² of new green spaces, and has positively impacted over 3000 children. The budget of 4.8 million euros is shared between the city (43%) and the metropolitan area (57%).
Citizen Participation and Recognition
Community engagement is a hallmark of this project. Through public meetings and co-construction efforts, urban furniture has been “up to children,” designed specifically for their needs. This inclusive approach has culminated in a strong visual identity for these spaces.
Grenoble’s endeavors have not gone unnoticed. In November 2023, the city won the Urban Challenges Prize in the inclusive city category. Additionally, it received a favorable score of 89/100 in the Sustainable Cities Challenge last April, albeit not winning the prize.
Impact on the Community
A study by the School of Architecture revealed that over 30% of parents now walk or ride bicycles to school—an encouraging 78% of parents noted feeling safer. Aesthetic improvements and enhanced air quality have also contributed to better mental and physical well-being among the children.
