The Guinea Hatchery Association hosted a press conference this Tuesday, September 19, 2023. On this occasion, members asked the authorities to ban importation and increase taxation on imported chicks.

“We are asking the State to provide us with protection through a ban on the importation of chicks or a tax on chicks that will enter Guinean territory. Because there are industries here, Guineans who have invested millions of dollars to provide quality chicks to Guinean breeders so that we can develop this poultry sector to create so many jobs and prevent our young people from to illegal immigration. We really want everyone to earn a living, it’s a future fight and it’s for food security,” explained Mamadou Bailo, president of the Guinea hatcheries.

For him, the importation of chicks constitutes a catastrophic situation for local industries which have a production capacity far greater than the national need.

Further, Mamadou Bailo Diallo estimates that with a production capacity of 18 million chicks per year, the Guinean poultry industry is forced to slow down because of “unfair competition”, “these local industries are tending towards closing. And, these closures will result in the loss of hundreds of jobs. And if nothing is done, several chick production units that remain will close shortly or invest elsewhere in the countries of the sub-region,” he explained.
